Many people who know about Homeopathy often think it is only treatment for physical illnesses and don't know about how beneficial it is in treating people suffering from psychiatric issues such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar, post traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, and all manner of delusions. In this blog I'm going to describe the Homeopathic perspective on what mental illness is, how Homeopathic medicine is used to help, and give case example to illustrate.
Homeopathy is a Holistic method which sees the person as four aspects working in coordination as one hole being. There is the spiritual person, the mental person, the emotional person, and the physical person. The spiritual person is beyond being effected by worldly concerns which contacts us as a deep sense of faith in the overall eternity and balance within ourself and all things. The mental person is the character tendencies and mental concepts and constructs of who we think we are and what the world is. The emotional person is the feeling, desires, attachments and aversions. The physical person is the body and all the material units which make of that body. The vital force is that part of the spiritual person which invigorates the being and mixes with the mental person to call the material units of nature into the function and form of the human being. Disease is when the mental person, swayed by the feeling and desires, warps and misdirects the flow of life and thus generates disorder in the form and function. Though the life remains unaffected, the warped flow of life effects the the mental, emotional and physical human.
Whether a disease is mental or physical we do not see it's origins as different, we only see the different sphere being effected. Someone suffering suicidal depression may need the same remedy a person having heart disease may need. What is called mental illness is where the disorder is most marked in the mental person in the form of delusions in perception of reality. To the Homeopath, all people have a deep inner delusion as just being part of the human condition. The difference between someone who is mentally ill and someone who is deemed normal is merely a difference in the capacity of ego strength to function in the outward collective delusion and keep the inner individual delusion from taking over the person's behavior.
The origins of the deep inner individual delusion can be speculated about in different ways. The more modern psychiatric view is that a person took a certain defensive survival stance during and early childhood trauma and got stuck, unable to come out of it when the threat is no longer present in the external world. A powerless person might have developed a split personality to gain some sense of power, or they might have withdrawn into a catatonic shell. Once this subconscious pattern takes hold in these formative years, some never develop the ego strength to suppress the pattern and behave in accordance with social standards and we will say they have X,Y,Z mental condition. Others do have ego strength, do very well to suppress and seem to get on well in the world. It may pop out during times of stress, but in a while the ego strength gets back in control. For this type of situation, when this issue has not been healed, instead of mental illness, the disturbance manifest in the physical body as symptoms and pathology. For example, a person who survived trauma by withdrawing into a catatonic shell but later had the ego strength to cope, will develop symptoms of external hardening and calcification as an expression of hiding behind a shell.
In Homeopathic treatment, cure is achieved by matching the symptoms of the patient with the symptoms of the remedy. It is by the similarity of the symptoms of the patient to the symptoms of the remedy that a healing surge in the life field is generated to throw of the warped mental, emotional, and physical pattern. Most Homeopathic medicines have symptoms in the mental, emotional, and physical spheres. In psychiatric cases we match mental symptoms to the mental symptoms of the patient. Each remedy has it unique mental symptoms and delusions which are manifest in dreams and fears of prover subjects. Certain remedies create delusions of being chased by monsters, others delusions of great responsibility and fear of failure, still others cause division of will and identity. When clear understanding of both patient and remedy occur in treatment, healing is assured.
Case example: A 17 year old boy with a history of abuse and depression attempts suicide by medications. He was raised in an environment where he got the message that you must be the best, most responsible, most outstanding and successful or the very air you breath is not justified (these were his father's very words). He had gone to the psychiatrist and was put on antidepressant medication. After a few months, he got into his mothers narcotic medications and sleeping pills and tried to end his life. The call comes that his is in the emergency room and what can be done Homeopathically. With this history, I determined that a very high potency of the remedy best known for suicidal depression around the issue of success and failure to be the best and most responsible, needed to be given every hour by his mother as soon as the patient was conscious again. No more psychiatric medications were administered and only Homeopathic medicine was applied. Since that time 8 months ago, the patient completely turned around. His first response was he couldn't understand what he was thinking. He is usually smiling and happy, in a good mood, very interested in his life and learning more about spirituality. He does not get depressed anymore and never has the thought that he is a failure. He has been able to assert to his father that those views about success and failure were not healthy or beneficial.
Many people who go to Homeopathy for psychiatric issues enjoy this type of benefit without the dangers of having to keep taking psychotropic medications. We can treat the person if currently on regular psychotropic medications and often the patient is soon able to ween off of them. If you or any family member is suffering from what would be a psychiatric illness, feel free to contact me to discuss treatment options available to you.
