Conventional medicine defines Alzheimer’s disease as a general term for brain hardening resulting in memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50 to 70 percent of dementia cases. However, from a homeopathic perspective, these symptoms are often seen as a life long crisis of identity to which dementia is the last and final pathological expression.
For the purpose of this article, identity is defined as: who we perceive we are in relationship to the whole Universe. The human experience became a mistake in identity when we started misidentifying ourselves with matter, our bodies, and objects of the senses. From here, this misidentification takes on numerous variations, divisions, and fragmentations. I’m going to give a few examples and explain how Homeopathy treats these unique identity issues so that we can free ourselves from specific issues of misidentification in order that we can lead fuller more creative lives in a more proper relationship to the Whole.
As Homeopathic practitioners we often gain an understanding of people which shows that they are stuck in a state where they don’t sense that their identity is solid or that it is weak and easily overcome by external things. Patients will be repeating themes such as “I don’t know who I am without my other”, “I have to suppress who I am or I will be abandoned”, “I don’t know who I am without my family” “I’m confused about who I am”, “I’m not here, I’m somewhere else”, “I am because I”m right”, ”I am because I know more “, “I am because of my image”, “I am because of my nation, religion, ethnic group, political party”.
If one feels weak or dependent in their identity, he will tend to attach to people with strong personalities. If one feels lack of solidity in identity, he will become part of institutional structures. People who are passive in nature will be subject to being used and controlled by those who are active and seek to tell other’s who they should be. In the case of Alzheimer’s I often see a life of confusion about who they are rising strong dependency on the approval of others. In the beginning the child was born into a family of dominating personalities who projected their sense of self onto the child thus interfering in the child’s development of identity. The child was never allowed to think his own thoughts or make his own decision. For example, the child imprinted on his father when his father was in the room, then on his mother when his mother was in the room, then on an older sibling when alone with him, and thus going round and round all through life, creating constant confusion about who he is, what he thinks, what he should decide. He doesn’t know if it is he who is thinking or if it is his dad’s head in place of his own head. At the bottom is a fear that if he dared to assert strong thought and opinions, the people he depends on might reject him.
In some cases, with this lack of solidity in identity, we will see a person take of very rigid, black and white beliefs in order to keep from breaking down. They cannot grasp complex or abstract thoughts and need to be part of some highly structured institution and do very simple structured tasks or they feel lost and confused. As they progress into middle age this mistunement begins to show a pattern of retention. What began as retention in opinions and feelings advancing to show in digestive problems such as severe constipation and retention of urine. Also there will be the first signs of mental impairments such as anxiety in unfamiliar places, losing things around the house, and mild forgetfulness. As the brain changes progress, then the well known symptoms of dementia ensue, leaving a hulk of a person who is lost, confused, and can’t even remember his own family members or his own name. This need not be!
Though Homeopathy can help at any stage in the progression in errors of identity, the best results can be had before this mistunement has manifested into physical pathology. When we see these issues early on, we can give the specific remedy which mirrors the specific issue of identity causing a healing reaction at the vital level allowing the person to be more centered in his real, more Universal self. If you have a sense that you might be suffering from an identity issue which is limiting your life, I invite you to call me at 214-587-4560 for a free 15 minute phone consultation to see if Homeopathy could be right for you.
